Well, match.com has redeemed itself and hopefully this little literary soap opera is over for now.\u00a0After my match.com\u00a0profile was inactivated because I had listed Moby-Dick<\/em> as one of my “books read,” I did my free speech rant (posted previously)\u00a0and then\u00a0relented a bit and\u00a0renamed the book\u00a0Moby-Richard <\/em>on the site.<\/p>\n

The profile remained in limbo,\u00a0so I talked to a second customer service person who proved\u00a0a little more competent and literate than the first one I’d spoken to. She proceeded to approve “Moby-Dick,” although I had to remove the URL nodepression.com<\/strong>,\u00a0which is the great roots music e-zine. \u00a0Apparently you can’t refer to any website, because redirecting a match.com customer to somewhere else on the Internet might lead them to something they deem offensive or inappropriate.<\/p>\n

So where does that leave us? How close are we to Big Brother and “1984” or to the time when people need to memorize all books because they are being burned by a totalitarian\u00a0government as immoral and subversive, as in Fahrenheit 451,<\/em>\u00a0Ray Bradbury’s classic dystopian novel?<\/p>\n

Well, you decide. But at least one popular social network is not completely ruled by moralistic\u00a0 automatons\u00a0And I’ve often thought that some regulation of the increasingly moral chaos of the Internet is needed.\u00a0Parents can use filters to protect their children, which is probably a good idea.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
