Album review: Eric Jacobson: Discover<\/em> (Origin Records)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eric Jacobson will hold an album release party at the Jazz Estate, p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Eric Jacobson blazes. In person, the naturally powerful Milwaukee trumpeter has long conveyed the impression: \u201cI\u2019m gonna cut anybody here, and all comers.\u201d That\u2019s fueled some willfully dynamic solos. With trumpet poised, his muscular angularity recalls an Italian Futurist sculpture. So,\u00a0Discover\u00a0<\/em>comes as a surprise, perhaps as a self-discovery, trading competitiveness for musical and artistic maturity.<\/p>\n

The tune \u201cDiscover\u201d arose from the experience of his father\u2019s death, prompting a \u201csearch for meaning and personal identity,\u201d writes annotator Rick Krause. The album opener \u201cNew Combinations,\u201d has a Jazz Messengers ensemble feel, amiable yet muscular. \u201cDiscover\u201d follows immediately: with a pensive, nostalgic tone and a forward-looking sense of form, Jacobson\u2019s solo toggles between tender memory and rising resolution, akin to Freddie Hubbard\u2019s gift for colorful storytelling. But not derivatively; he\u2019s expanding post-bop\u2019s wheelhouse of modernity.<\/p>\n

Tenor saxophonist Geof Bradfield complements coolly, spinning webs of finely suspended arabesques, recalling Warne Marsh, but with a warmer tone. Pianist Bruce Barth emerges inventive and versatile, capable of delicate touches, a la Hank Jones. The album\u2019s hot\/cool dynamic still accents the lyrical, with Blue Mitchell\u2019s bluesy \u201cSir John\u201d as the ballsy ballast. The Dizzy Gillespie tune is not bop pyrotechnics but one of Dizzy\u2019s soberest ballads, \u201cCon Alma.\u201d Jacobson pointedly closes with one of the repertoire\u2019s most poignant\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0socially-aware odes, about a man nicknamed \u201cOld Folks,\u201d crying out for Deedette Hill\u2019s lyrics.<\/p>\n

One\u00a0thing\u00a0we don\u2019t know\u00a0about\u00a0\u201cOld Folks\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Did he\u00a0fight\u00a0for the blue or the gray?<\/em><\/p>\n

But he\u2019s so\u00a0democratic\u00a0and so diplomatic<\/em><\/p>\n

We\u00a0always\u00a0let him have his way<\/em><\/p>\n

In the\u00a0evenings\u00a0after supper<\/em><\/p>\n

What\u00a0stories\u00a0he tells<\/em><\/p>\n

How he held his\u00a0speech\u00a0at\u00a0Gettysburg\u00a0for\u00a0Lincoln\u00a0that day<\/em><\/p>\n
